Adopt a Fast Friends dog

Retired racing Greyhounds

Greyhounds are quiet, clean, gentle, affectionate, friendly, eager-to-please dogs. They get along well with older children and other animals (including cats). Retired racing Greyhounds are grateful for their new homes, bond with others, and reward their new owners with constant affection.

Learn more about Greyhounds to see if a retired racer would be a good fit for your family.

Retired racing Greyhounds placed through Fast Friends are usually between two and five years old. These Greyhounds have been raised in a kennel environment, so life in a home with people is a completely new experience. New owners of a retired racer must be patient and willing to help their greyhound adjust to life after the track.

More than just Greyhounds

Fast Friends also adopts abandoned hunting dogs and street dogs from Spain, rescued meat trade dogs from China, and other sighthounds and sighthound mixes from all around the world. All have different needs, and we make sure we know each of our dogs well before listing them for adoption.

What is a “sighthound”?

A “Sighthound” is a type of dog that hunts by its keen eyesight and fast speed. They are typically characterized by long legs and an overall aerodynamic shape. Greyhounds are sighthounds, as are borzoi, whippets, Pharaoh hounds, and many others. See a gallery of some of the wonderful sighthounds who have passed through Fast Friends.

Adoption Process

Fast Friends is committed to always set up adoptable dogs for success, and our adoption process reflects this commitment. We take the time to know our dogs as individuals, and will help you choose the one that will be the best fit for you. Part of our adoption process is a home visit, so we are only able to adopt within an approximately 2-hour radius of our facility.

Once we review your completed application and references, we will contact you to arrange an interview with your entire family. The interview gives us an opportunity to fully explain the nature of greyhounds and get to know you.

Interviews are scheduled between 11:00 am and 3:00 pm, and are available by appointment only. Please do not drop in, as staff may already have appointments and not be able to work with you.

Fast Friends will help you choose the Greyhound or other sighthound who is the best fit for your household and lifestyle.

Once you have selected a dog to join your family, we will schedule a date for a home visit. A $100 non-refundable deposit is due at the time. This payment covers the veterinary visit and health certificate each dog receives prior to going home. If the adoption proceeds as scheduled, the deposit will be deducted from your final adoption fee.

On the date of your home visit, a representative from Fast Friends will bring your dog and go over training solutions for helping them become fully house-trained, learn to navigate stairs, and more.

If you are interested in coming in to meet the adoptable retired racing Greyhounds or other sighthounds, please:

  1. Complete and return your adoption application (online or print and send)

  2. Once received, our adoption staff will call for a phone interview to talk about your application and answer any questions you may have.

  3. Then, we will schedule an appointment for you to come and meet the hounds. Please note that if you have other dogs, you may be asked to bring them in order to do an “introduction” with the hound you are considering adopting.

Adoption Fee

Your adoption fee helps offset some of the costs that have gone into the care of your dog while they were at Fast Friends, including spay or neuter surgery, vaccinations, dental care, and more. The adoption fee for dogs that come to Fast Friends from abroad is higher due to the additional costs involved in international rescue, particularly transportation to Fast Friends and extra veterinary visits before leaving their home country.

All dogs adopted from Fast Friends are spayed or neutered, up-to-date with shots, and have received dental care if needed. All of our international dogs are microchipped.

Your dog will come home with a certificate of good health following a full veterinary exam, a dental cleaning kit, and a new martingale collar, harness, and lead.

Adoption Fee for Greyhounds: $1550 ($50 discount for cash or check payments)

Adoption Fee for other sighthounds: $1050 ($50 discount for cash or check payments)

Nonrefundable Deposit: $100 due at the time your home visit is scheduled

Special Needs Greyhounds

Fast Friends never turns any Greyhound away, and we have several Greyhounds who are categorized as special needs. If you are interested in one of these dogs, please be prepared for the application process to take longer than usual, as you may need to make multiple visits to the Adoption Center to earn your new Greyhound's trust, install a fence around your yard, or attend training classes. Your patience will be well rewarded!

Thank you for choosing adoption - we look forward to meeting you!
